But we did watch Dogtown and Z Boys and Valley Girl. I love California.

I also drank a lemon drop. Yowza.

Gotta Cali film to recommend us? We'd love to hear from you!

Aren't all American films Cali films? ;)

I can only think of Los Angeles film noir type movies; this is off the top of my head:
Sunset Blvd
Double Indemnity
Chinatown
L.A. Confidential
Mulholland Drive

Less Than Zero, right? But you've probably seen that. Plus it has the LL Cool J jam. And The Birds happens on the California coast?

I loved Dogtown and Z Boys, too. Did you see the doc on the same subject?

I'm a fan of The Rock (why am I printing this?), with Sean Connery, about spies and breaking out of Alcatraz and whatnot. At least, I think that's what it's about. It's a good, dumb movie set in SF.

And the Maltese Falcon, of course.

Hm....will try to think of more....the film version of Mistress of Spices was set in Old Oakland (one of my fave hoods here), but I have no idea whether it's complete crap or not.

Hmmm... What do you think of the films of Gregg Araki, if you're familiar with them? (In particular, Nowhere, which seems to be his most explicit love/hate letter to L.A.)

Never having actually *lived* in California, I find them strangely compelling (defintiely visually, and in terms of production design), in a "vicarious tourist" kind of way.

This, despite the fact that his character's usually fall into one of two camps -- hopelessly more-blase-than-thou, or problematically naive/hopeful. And the cast's performances tend to be frequently so cloying in their would-be rebellion, I almost wonder if it's meant to be a satire of trite adolescence, and it's just going over my head.
